Mythology's Last Gods

Mythology's Last Gods
More than 100 years ago historians began applying critical methods of documentary analysis to the Judaeo-Christian Bible. To scholars who had hoped to prove the Bible's authenticity, the results were traumatic. One by one the various books of the Bible were discovered to contain errors of fact; inaccurate guesses; rationalizations; prophecies ex post facto, usually combined with prophecies of the future that proved inaccurate; mythology god and unmistakable, deliberate lies. Such was the power of the churches that, despite the publication of thousands of scholarly books mythology god and articles refuting every part of the Judaeo-Christian Bible, to this day the existence of unchallengeable proof that the Bible is a work of fiction is unknown to ninety percent of the population of Christian-dominated societies. For a century this information has been available only to students willing to wade through dozens of books, each of which deals with only one aspect of Judaeo-Christian mythology. It is hoped that, by bringing together information on the origin mythology god and development of every part of the Yahweh- mythology god and Jesus-myths, this book will make the facts available to a large enough segment of the population to end the equation of god-mythology with history permanently. Dr. Harwood became interested in the history of Judaeo-Christian mythology when, as an undergraduate at Calgary, he was assigned to write a research paper on Mystery Religions in the Early Roman Empire, mythology god and discovered that the god-eating ritual in which he participated weekly as a believing Christian had existed three thousand years before Jesus' birth. Not for three years, however, could he fully abandon the disproved beliefs to which he had been emotionallycommitted, mythology god and acknowledge that gods are as imaginary as fairies. Beginning from the emergence of the world from Chaos mythology god and Night, Hard describes the legends of the Children of Kronos, mythology god and the mythological beings that populated Greek consciousness - Harpies, Gorgons, Geryon mythology god and Echidna. From the war with the Titans, the narrative proceeds to the rule of the Olympian Gods, from their war with the Giants to their interventions in the legends of the heroes. The legends, activities mythology god and associations of each god mythology god and goddess are recounted in turn; younger gods mythology god and foreign deities are also covered. The challenge of recounting the history of the age of the heroes, from Heracles, Theseus, Cadmus mythology god and Oedipus to the Trojan War mythology god and its aftermath, in a coherent chronology, is met by basing the account on the systematizing work of Apollodorus in the second century AD. Special chapters are devoted to Jason mythology god and the Argonauts, the career of Heracles mythology god and the Trojan War. The complex mythology god and sometimes contradictory mass of legends functioned for the Greeks as the history of their origins, while for us the stories are full of local colour mythology god and archetypal meaning. The narrative framework of the book remains that of Rose, with helpful signposting so that the book can be used as work of reference. Besides the narrative chapters, it includes full documentation of the ancient sources, Cop

The Giants lived in a place called Asgard, the location of which is unclear but which might have been located in the sky, since it was reached by means of the Western world. While not being a revealed religion, that is one based on a book written by a prophet, but a collection of similar beliefs shared by Germanic tribes, the Eddas and other writings have long held a central role in our understanding of Norse mythology. Germanic mythology, in its turn, had evolved from an earlier Indo-European mythology. Esteemed scholar Leeming, who has authored more than 12 books on mythology, here offers the first comprehensive narrative study of the mythology of its kind available in English.
